Health Problems Caused by Modern Lifestyle

With advancement in medical industry, it has become easier to tackle many health problems. Nowadays, we are healthier and live longer than ever before. But modern lifestyles of 21st century has brought their own threats. Modern life with its importance on information, mechanisation, computerisation and globalization, has made our work easier and facilitated us with more leisure options. This has further led to the growth of a whole host of new health problems. Here, is a list of a few modern day health problems:

1. Text claw
Frequent mobile users can get affected by text claws causing wrist pain, thumb tenderness, hand spasm and difficulty in gripping. Known as De Quervain syndrome in medical terms, text claw is a type of repetitive strain injury. It causes pain in the thumb and difficulty to straighten it due to inflamed tendons. You can treat this condition by avoiding thumb-intensive activities, applying ice to the affected area and taking pain relief if required.

2. Information fatigue syndrome
Today’s information age has brought in a never-ending storm of digital distractions including 24 hours television to mobile phone messages, chatting, emails and games. This information deluge can cause information fatigue syndrome also known as information overload. This will lead you to anxiety, poor concentration, indecision and a pressure to check your messages frequently. You should learn to take control of using the technological devices rather than letting them control you.

3. 3D viewing sickness
3D movies and TV programmes can be a turn-off, making us suffer from eyestrain, headaches or nausea. It is quite normal for our eyes to rotate inwards to focus on an object when it is getting closer in a process called accommodation.
While watching a 3D film, our eyes focus on an area in front of the screen, making everything temporarily blurry. This for anyone with less than perfectly aligned eyes or not sitting straight in front of the screen can lead to nauseous, headache-inducing optical effects.

4. Blue light insomnia
The modern digital devices with LED screens and smartphone displays emit some of the same blue light as found in normal daylight. A few glances can cause levels of powerful sleep hormone melatonin to fall resulting in insomnia.
